Jill Peckelun

Artist

I consider myself to be simply a painter whose work continues to evolve. But I understand folks want a little more definition than that. So, I could describe my artistic style to be in line with the Post Impressionists and the immediacy of working from life. Most of my paintings are based upon direct observation. I always take some artistic license and end up painting a place I want to be. The location is an inspiration, but the painting itself is the destination. It’s never really a strict representation. So in its appeal to the viewer it takes you someplace you want to be, not necessarily a back access road in Palmdale, you know? That’s why the title is always something other than simply the address of where I painted.

Despite bugs, heat, cold, wind, rain and the rest of what goes into transporting materials and supplies to a location, there is nothing in the world like standing in the vista that you are painting. There is a visceral interplay between an artist and a subject …you become a part of it. Painting from life is enthralling. Saying that, there is also a place for studio work. Studio work can involve a lot of my quiet thinking time, playing time, editing and refining. Many pieces are begun on location, occasionally worked on for a session in the studio, back to the location for several trips, finishing touches in the studio.

I owe a huge debt of appreciation to the artists who have gone before me and am deeply grateful to the painterly influences of the masters: John Folinsbee, Joaquin Sorolla, John Singer Sargent, Thomas Moran, Paul Cezanne, Tom Thomson, N C Wyeth, and Walter Anderson- the colors, the application of paint, the range of values, the fearlessness of painting constantly.
