Finding and doing what makes you happy in life can be a challenge.

I dabbled in different arts since I was a child. My early summers were spent crabbing and raking oysters on the Delaware and New Jersey waters. Evening beach campfires created warm glows and in the day, mystical jellyfish sparkled in the bay. The love of the coast had lasting memories which are brought to life in my Coastal Impressions paintings – sold in stores throughout the Outer Banks, N.C.

The love of growing flowers and gardening led to large floral images done in flowing, vibrant colors. Youthful rock hunting adventures morphed into a small lapidary and jewelry business at the age of 13. I was mesmerized by the colors of polished stones and crystals. Today, my favorite paints have finely ground stone, such as Sleeping Beauty Turquoise, adding beautiful depth and texture.

As an adult I found watercolor painting gave me the most joy and my professional artist journey started. I now specialize in watercolors, pallet knife oils and fun collages along with painting parties in watercolor and collage. Over the years I have exhibited my work many shows, restaurants and businesses in Central PA and was a resident artist at the Harrisburg Millworks for five years.

Featured in the April 2023 issue of Harrisburg’s The Burg Magazine, link: The Painted Word – Meet Joan of Art , I opened Hershey Art Gallery & Studio. A 1950’s garage behind our home was repurposed, renovated and a second floor added. It features reclaimed beans & flooring, wormwood American Chestnut sills and pine casings milled from the property. A large patio and perennial garden was also added. The cozy, welcoming atmosphere encourages guests to see the art, antiques and vintage finds, relax with a beverage, settle in a cozy settee, read an art book and enjoy the space.

Creating works of art, on any material, is something that drives you from the inside. You just have to create. I wanted to inspire other artists by sharing the gallery space, curating local artisan work to round out the shop’s offerings. Two of the artisan’s are represented for the first time while the others are well known in their medium. Currant artisans represented include Jason Lyons, Lynn Shirk, Jan Lipensky, Jana MacGinness, Patrice White and Jason Smeltz. Their original work includes jewelry, art charcuterie boards, repurposed metal sculpture, botanical soap, scrubs and bath soaks and more. A detailed description of their work is at https://www.hersheyart.com.

Thank you for visiting. Love the Art you Buy – and Buy the Art you Love.
